If you are new to the industry or from outside Australia, you have probably never heard of the "Unit" Department. The Unit Department is a vital part of any film crew that manages the onsite logistics and day-to-day infrastructure needed to support cast and crew during a film shoot. Whenever someone needs something from outside their own department, Unit is usually who they call. Need umbrellas, chairs or a gazebo erected? Time for a coffee? Call Unit.
Unit Department builds and manages the main gathering area (Unit Base) away from the active set for crew parking, catering and equipment holding. We also provide essential on-set amenities like Coffee & Tea stations, Snacks, drinking water, seating, bins, toilets and weather shelters as well as
maintaining portable holding rooms or greenrooms for Actors and Extras, workstations for ADs, Hair & Makeup (HMU) and Costume departments. We coordinate waste collection, power, water supplies, vehicle and generator refuelling. On smaller productions without a dedicated Transport Dept, Unit can also be responsible for towing of caravans, toilets or generators.
